35mm Film Reel Chair

Celebrating Cinema

The "Reel Chair" is a celebration of cinema using repurposed 1940's film reels. For me, films are the synthesis of every art form. It is technical and expressive and I wanted my work to embody aspects of film. The vibrant cushions are inset into the negative space of the reel, highlighting its form with a stark contrast in color and texture. My design draws inspiration from mid-century modern design, jewelry, and the tools of filmmaking to bring it to life.

Behind the Design

Plywood internal cushion structure

The biggest challenge was to assemble the back rest of the chair while maintaining a sleek side profile of the upholstery. The cushions are attached to a steel frame that is custom fit to the film reel. The reel is then placed on top, locking in the cushions to the frame.
